What is ice dye?
Ice dyeing is a unique type of tie dye that can result in stunning saturation and beautiful color patterning. Our process includes soaking each garment in a soda ash bath for 20 minutes or more. The garment is then folded, bunched or crumpled into the desired shape for dyeing and tied with a wax coated sinew (string) to keep the shape. We use a mixture of reactive dye powder and ice to cover the garment with color and let the ice melt. Once the ice is fully melted and color is dispersed throughout the garment, each piece is stored for at least 24 hours to allow the dye to saturate and fix. After the dye is set, a color lock detergent is used to wash the garment for maximum color fastness. Follow the link below to build your own ice dye creation.
